The Golden rectangle had been known since antiquity as having a pleasing shape, and is frequently found in art and architecture as a rectangular shape that seems “right” to the eye. It is mentioned in Euclid’s Elements and was known to artists and philosophers such as Leonardo da Vinci.
The Golden Rectangle is a rectangle whose side lengths are in the golden ratio, that is, approximately 1: 1.618. A distinctive feature of this shape is that when a square section is removed, the remainder is another golden rectangle.
